Dwelling and Cultivating- A Work of Faithfulness
A week and a half a ago, I needed that verse. I needed the reminder to trust God, to do good, to be faithful. However, I was in a foreign land, things were new, exciting, different. Life was enjoyable, living amongst a group of Jesus-loving friends. Days were long, but every morning was easy to wake up to. Then I came home. Coming home is one of the best things around, sometimes it's a bit hard too. Things are not always easy, exciting, life isn't always necessarily enjoyable. I need a little more prompting to wake each day ready to live life with Jesus. I realized that verse was for me, even more so here, at home, as it was there. Psalm 37:3 says,
"Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness."
I absolutely need to trust my Lord, to desire to continually do good, but the last part is where it's at. I need to dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. Here, right where I'm at, in the present, I need to be faithful. To cultivate faithfulness. I looked up different definitions for cultivate and words were used such as, further, encourage, refine, acquire, develop, apply oneself, to improve by labor, care, or study. It is also frequently used in term of farming. To prepare a place for growing or to foster the growth of. I want to be faithful right where God has placed me. And that's going to require me to work at it. In the day-in-and-day-out, I want to be faithful. I want to be trusting and doing good because my faithfulness continues to grow. I want and need to dwell in the land. To be content where I'm at. To not only take the opportunities that present themselves, but to create opportunities. I want to live this life well, right here, right now.
And maybe that means not always doing the next great, exciting thing, but being willing to be faithful and continue with what God has given me care over. To be faithful with what seems like little, because He wants to do big things with it. Maybe it means staying right where you are, or heading to another land where trusting and dwelling are even harder. Wherever you are, trust in your Father, your Creator, and cultivate faithfulness. I am thankful that God is a God who is faithful. And helps us to develop faithfulness in ourselves.
