Discipleship. (Part 1)
Discipleship. Discipleship has been on my heart for sometime now. It's not like I've not thought about it before, but something somehow just sparked inside of me. It may have been when I saw a great need for it, or people who were doing it well. How will they grow unless they have a teacher? I have gotten to see some amazing lives that are wholly living for our Creator, God, lover, Savior, and Friend. It's something that spurs you on to greatness, passion, pursuit, love, and service. When you see the lives that speak 2 Timothy 2:2: "The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also." It makes you want to live that way, as we should be. A life that pursues Him, so that others are encouraged to do likewise. It should be something that changes our lives. A chain effect that continues on and on. Because everyone wants love, hope, freedom, peace, and YOU have been given this great privilege to show them just that.
While every disciple is a believer, maybe not every believer is a disciple. According to Merriam-Webster's online dictionary, a disciple is "one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another." Evaluate your life. Am I, are you a true disciple? Can we really expect to go into the world and make disciples if we are not living a life of discipleship ourselves? It takes one to make one. A disciple is a learner, a pupil, one who comes to be taught. A disciple eagerly listens and watches her Teacher with an intense desire to apply what has been taught. Attention and intention. Someone who steps out out and says, "I will follow", and in so doing teaches others by example because they're following the ultimate example. A disciple is someone who loves God more than anything else. A disciple is one who lives their life in obedience. A disciple does make disciples. Having a vision for what God wants to do. Looking for relationship, looking to love, not seeing what others look to be to you, but seeing them for what God created them to be. "When we invest in the lives of other people, we transmit not only what we know, but who we are." A disciple is faithful. "A faithful man who can find?" A disciple is humble. Not perfect, but teaching what we know. A disciple walks with the Spirit, living in communication with Him. A disciple is going to look weird to world.
